Choosing the right high school

January 20, 2020

The high school years are the most formative years of a child's life.

Choosing the right high school for your child is a stressful time for every parent so it's important to know the choices available to you.

The choices available

There are a few high school options available for parents. They include:

  • Independent private or religious schools
  • Government selective schools
  • Government non-selective schools

Each vary in their fees and offerings in terms of culture and resources. Although it varies from school to school, independent private schools tend to have higher fees than government schools. Some private schools demand fees of more than $10,000 a year, with increases in more senior grades.

Which high school is the best one for my child?

When choosing a school, it is important to take into consideration the location, school fees, extracurricular activities such as sport as well as academic excellence. Do your research to get a feel for the school. You could talk to parents of students at the school, read their school website and even visit the school.

From an academic perspective, this is how schools performed in the 2019 Year 12 High School Certificate:

  • 10 of the top 20 schools were government selective schools. Their success rate ranged from 40 - 70% in the HSC.
  • 10 of the top 20 schools were independent private schools. Their success rate ranged from 40 - 70% in the HSC.
  • The top-performing government non-selective school was ranked 67 with a success rate of 20% in the HSC.

These results are part of a continuing trend over many years. They prove that government selective schools and independent private schools are the most academically-strong in the state.

How do I enrol my child into a government selective school?

If you consider academic excellence to be a priority, you may want to consider a government selective school designed for gifted and talented students.

To enrol, your child must do the Selective Test to gain acceptance. Acceptance is based purely on individual academic merit. There is no preference given to students living in the local area or siblings.

It is a rigorous test for which we offer training programs. If your child an aspiring student, contact us to learn more about the Selective training program.
